What is skeletal dysplasia?

It is a disorder in which there is abnormal development of bone and cartilage.
There are four main types skeletal dysplasia








(i)Achondrodysplasia
(ii)Achondrodysgenesis
(iii)Osteogenesis imperfecta
(iv)Thanotropic dysplasia

Achondroplasia is the most common non-lethal dysplasia.
Thanotropic dysplasia is most common lethal dysplasia. Thanotropic is a Greek term meaning “death bringing”

Terms related to skeletal dysplasia
(i)Rhizomelia-shortening of proximal bones (femur/humerus)
(ii)Mesomelia-shortening of middle segment (radius/ulna)
(iii)Acromelia-Shortening of distal bones (metacarpals, phalanges)
(iv)Micromelia- shortening involving the entire limb
